Jupiter Growing Together Volunteer Officer

Why we need you:
Jupiter Growing Together project operates within Jupiter Urban Wildlife, providing a green sanctuary within the industrial setting of Grangemouth. Our project invites volunteers to participate in managing our TCV site, focusing on sustainable gardening practices, biodiversity enhancement, and the repurposing of items through our woodshed. Our primary goal is to enhance the mental and physical well-being of individuals facing enduring health issues or socio-economic challenges. We seek a dedicated individual centred on people to assist the Senior Project Officer in planning, organising and overseeing sessions. This role aims to expand our capacity and activities while maintaining a secure, safe and encouraging environment for our groups. Key Responsibilities: • Coordinate and supervise volunteer engagement, ranging from nature-based activities to site maintenance tasks. • Support volunteer training and development. • Manage volunteer information and record activity tasks. • Ensure volunteer safety and well-being through effective risk assessing. • Assume the responsibility of being a key holder for the site.

In the role of Volunteer Officer, you will have the chance to engage in planning, supporting and leading activities that aim to involve volunteers in enhancing our Jupiter site. This role offers practical hands-on experience across a diverse spectrum of activities such as sustainable gardening, citizen science, nature-inspired arts and crafts, woodworking, and site maintenance. Moreover, you will have the opportunity to connect with TCV and other local community initiatives whilst participating in organising and managing public events. Successful candidates will benefit from guidance provided by a designated Senior Project Officer who will supervise your training and development objectives. You will also be included in our induction process and receive First Aid Training. Additionally, you will have access to courses covering Project Leadership, Safeguarding, Risk Assessment, and other related subjects. The Volunteer Officer position serves as an excellent stepping stone towards a career in Volunteer Management or the Conservation sector. Many of our Volunteer Officers have gone on to become TCV staff members. Branded clothing will be provided along with reasonable travel expenses.

What you need:
• Possesses strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage and motivate volunteers, fostering inclusivity within the team. • Demonstrates confidence in both independent work and collaborative team settings. • Exhibits enthusiasm coupled with a positive, non-judgmental demeanour. • Demonstrates adaptability and problem-solving skills. • Approachable with good listening skills. Successful candidates will be required to complete a Disclosure Scotland application (costs will be covered by TCV). No prior Volunteer Officer or conservation experience is necessary as full training will be provided.

How much time:
1-2 days per week on days we deliver sessions which are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for a minimum of 6 months. The opportunity to be VO for more than one day a week will improve the level of experience you gain and the number of opportunities available to you. You will be supported in your role by experienced staff through regular meetings where issues can be resolved and guidance provided. You will have all reasonable expenses covered (foreign travel excepted) so will not be out of pocket through your volunteering. You will be insured and expected to comply with the policies and procedures of The Conservation Volunteers.

Where roles will be responsible for others, we need to check your references. When the role involves young people and vulnerable adults, we will need to ask for an Enhanced Disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau, Central Registered Body in Scotland or appropriate body in Northern Ireland.
