Allotment Project

Are you interested in growing your own food? Whether you’re completely new to allotment gardening, or would like to increase your knowledge and skills, why not come along to our food growing sessions?

The Conservation Volunteers run two food growing projects in Bedford, one at the Brickhill Allotments and one in the Green Man Garden in Addison Howard Park, Kempston.

Our Brickhill Allotment sessions run on alternate Saturday mornings, from 10 - 1.

The project is designed to enable residents to learn about organic food growing - and literally reap the benefits.

The Green Man Garden is a hidden gem, a community space tucked away in the Addison Howard park in Kempston. Throughout the year we'll be running a series of workshops on specific topics, as well as general drop in gardening sessions. Drop in sessions are held on Wednesday mornings.

You don't need to attend every session - just drop in when you can.

The groups are really friendly, and we always make sure we find time for a cup of tea and a biscuit during the session! All the food we grow is shared between the groups and we also have regular food tasting sessions.

Those that get bitten by the home-grown bug can gain the experience and confidence to progress from the project to renting their own full-size allotments in the town.

Both projects are run on an organic basis, without the use of chemicals and with areas to encourage wildlife.

The scheme is open to everyone and offers the benefits of social gardening with a group a like-minded individuals. As well as providing a worth-while and healthy hobby, the project provides a chance to learn new skills hands-on, and of course to eat your own organically-produced fruit and vegetables.

Tools, materials, support and advice are provided by The Conservation Volunteers Bedford Community Food Growing Officer Katherine Miskin, and the group members decide what they wish to grow.
