Growing Greener/Tyfu’n Wyrdd is a "brand” which describes growing vegetables, fruit, herbs, spices, native plants and tress organically in a community setting
Activities and sites are managed in the interests of biodiversity, nature conservation, recycling and waste minimisation.
Food production is linked to the benefits of good nutrition, and physical activity in the natural environment.
Typical sites would include allotments, community gardens, the grounds of schools and hospitals - wherever there is space and the collective will to use it to Grow Greener.
During pauses in the growing and maintenance cycle, Growing Greener groups can work on other local community environmental projects.
Skills are developed through expert advice, and thorough sharing knowledge amongst the participants.
Activities are suitable for a very wide range of people and are done socially, so a “Growing Greener” group is key to success.
Growing Greener groups can be constituted formally, as an independent group, e.g. Treblaenmaes Growing Greener; or as part of an existing organisation, e.g. 25th Scouts Growing Greener. Constituted groups are eligible for affiliation to, and support from, TCV’s Community Network.
Groups will be encouraged and supported to network with each other, and with like-minded local community organisations.
The Green Gym is an activity that by its very design should be as inclusive as possible. We are developing partnerships with specialised organisations to develop the concept in Wales. We have compiled a database of contacts in women's, ethnic minority organisations and groups such as Age Concern and the Wales Council for the Blind across Wales. We have received financial support from the Welsh Assembly Government to develop diversity partnerships and to link with different aspects of the health agenda, particularly physical exercise and nutrition.
