About the role

Are you passionate about nature, community engagement, and Citizen Science? Do you want to inspire people from all backgrounds to connect with Scotland's incredible biodiversity? If so, we'd love to hear from you!

Scotland Counts is an inclusive and collaborative Citizen Science partnership led by TCV, working with environmental organisations to support the Scottish Biodiversity Strategy. Our aims are simple yet powerful.

- Increase people's connection with and understanding of Scotland's natural heritage and biodiversity.
- Empower individuals and communities to collect and record data, contributing to scientific knowledge about species and ecosystems.
- Ensure Citizen Science is accessible to all, fostering diversity and inclusion in participation.

Since launching our Citizen Science Volunteering Group in Scotland, over 40 volunteers have taken part in activities such as:
- Wetland Bird Surveys (WeBS)
- National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme (NHMP)
- Wee Forest surveys
- The Butterfly Conservation Big Butterfly Count
- TCV's Dead Good Deadwood Survey

We are also excited to bring Identiplant coordination under Scotland Counts, creating further opportunities for people to develop skills in plant identification and ecological recording.

In addition, we support educators by offering free continuing professional development (CPD) training. These sessions help teachers and community leaders build the skills and confidence to lead Citizen Science activities with young people.

Through this programme, we work alongside communities, schools, and individuals to make Citizen Science meaningful, engaging, and accessible. No matter your experience or background, everyone has a valuable role to play in understanding and protecting our natural environment.

As a Senior Project Officer, you will play a key role in leading Citizen Science activities, engaging with volunteers, and ensuring participation is fun, inclusive, and rewarding. You will collaborate with partner organisations, funders, and community groups to grow Scotland Counts and expand our reach.

Your responsibilities will include designing and delivering engaging Citizen Science projects and training sessions tailored to diverse communities and audiences, building strong relationships with volunteers by providing guidance, mentorship, and support, and promoting inclusivity by identifying and removing barriers to participation. You will represent Scotland Counts at events, and meetings, advocating for the importance of Citizen Science and community engagement while securing funding and resources to sustain and grow the programme. Additionally, you will lead fieldwork activities and surveys, supporting volunteers in collecting high-quality data that contributes to scientific research and conservation efforts. You will also develop and share resources to enhance public understanding of biodiversity and ecological monitoring, ensuring Citizen Science remains accessible, impactful, and engaging for all.

We are looking for
A self-motivated and enthusiastic person who thrives both independently and as part of a team.
Experience in engaging communities and volunteers in environmental activities.
The ability to deliver engaging, high-quality training and events.
Confidence in working with funders and partners to explore new opportunities.

Why Join Our Team?
Be part of a programme that is making a tangible impact on Scotland's biodiversity.
Work with a supportive and passionate team dedicated to environmental engagement.
Help shape the future of Citizen Science in Scotland and empower diverse communities to take action for nature.

If you are excited about connecting people with science and nature, we encourage you to apply. We are committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all, and we look forward to hearing from you!
