Green woodworking workshops in South Wood, using the timber that we have collected in the woodland during coppicing. Learn how to split green chestnut to make rusitc gates. Make your own mallets or benches. Perhaps some whittling.

Ham Pond - Vegetation & reed management

Activity description
We will be working within and around Ham Pond to complete annual vegetation and reed bed management. This blue-space is managed for biodiversity by the Friends of Ham Common Pond and Richmond Council. The common reed grows to form large reedbeds which act as important habitat for many bird species (e.g. reed warbler). In ponds, and smaller waterways, reedbeds can start to dominate the habitat reducing the amount of open water available for waterfowl to use. Reedbeds are often managed yearly, with removal of small sections of reeds each year. We will provide waders and gloves. If you have smaller feet, I would recommend bringing an extra thick pair of socks as the smallest wader size we have available is a 7.

Activity description
We are very pleased to be returning to Dulwich Park after many years, to help the 'Friends of' group with the management of the reedbeds around the perimeter of the park lake. The reeds haven't been cut for quite a few years so the reed beds are now very large, so we will be reducing the reedbed cover by 25% in the soutneastern corner of the lake. We will be cutting the reeds at ground / water level, and bagging up all the arisings in bulk sacks for the parks staff to collect.

Activity description
Join our regular Wednesday conservation workdays at the Ecology Park and help the wardens carry out vital management work in the park's different habitats - marsh, meadow, lakes, ponds, shingle beach and woodland. You can just turn up on a Wednesday and don't need to book ahead but, the first time you volunteer, we will ask you to fill out a TCV Volunteer Welfare Form (or we can email this to you in advance if you prefer). You will be working as part of a volunteer team with the park wardens, carrying out tasks such as pond clearing, reed cutting, meadow cutting, coppicing (cutting smaller tree stems), digging and weeding.
