Crane Park - Winter coppicing

Activity description
We will be coppicing along the River Crane, working to remove small trees growing along the river bank and invasive/dominant species from the woodland. Coppicing along the river allows more light into this environment, promoting the growth of soft vegetation (a food source of the translocated water voles!). The root systems of these coppiced trees continue to grow and bind the soil, reducing soil erosion risk along the river. To coppice, is to fell a tree/sapling at its base (or 'stool') which promotes growth of further shoots. The result is multi-stemmed bushier growth. Coppicing is a traditional form of woodland management, with its use dating back to the Stone Age. Coppicing was originally used to ensure source of firewood and timber. Contemporarily, coppicing is primarily used to improve the health and biodiversity of woodland areas.

Activity description
Food growing and gardening tasks. Each week will vary depending on what needs doing, but can include seed sowing, planting out, watering, composting, weeding, construction of raised beds and garden signs. Tasks are suitable for all abilities. We take a break at around 12.30pm with hot drinks, biscuits and fruit provided.

Together we'll be creating meadows, building habitats, managing woodland areas and getting hands on with some mini construction- all while helping nature thrive at Kitwell Substation. This is a great opportunity to: - Learn new green skills and gain experience in conservation. - Reconnect with nature and enjoy time in fresh air. - Meet like-minded people and be a part of a supportive, friendly group. No prior experience needed- just bring your enthusiasm, sturdy footwear and a love of the outdoors!

Join us in the garden at Milebrrok Hall for a couple of hours of relaxed conversation and food growing. We have a greenhouse here to enable us to start the growing season off early. There are also a couple of raised beds which are readily accessible and easy to manage. This session coincides with the coffee morning too, so a warm brew is never far away. All tools and gloves etc are provided for you.
