Practical Conservation - Tuesdays

Activity description
We run practical conservation tasks in various locations in York and the surrounding area from 9am-4.30pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays each week. Transport provided from Tang Hall Community Centre. No experience necessary. The work varies from season to season. In winter you could be tree planting, hedge laying, or creating and maintaining ponds and wetlands; whilst in summer you could be constructing wildlife areas in schools, creating footpaths, making hay, or undertaking invasive species control. If you want to get involved in practical work outdoors, learn new skills (or share old ones!) and work with a fun and friendly group then come and join in.

Join The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) to enhance the biodiversity of Glasgow’s many fantastic parks and greenspaces. Help care for the local woodlands and wildlife areas, plant trees and hedges, create wildflower meadows, clear invasive plant species, and much more! Conservation volunteering is a great opportunity to make a difference for nature and to combat climate change. TCV projects run daily from Tuesday – Saturday, approximately 10am – 2pm, with city centre pick-ups and drop-offs. There’s no minimum commitment – just join in when you can. Nature Counts Cumbernauld

Activity description
We meet every Tuesday 10:30-13:00 at different Scottish Wildlife Trust and North Lanarkshire Council wildlife reserves, across Cumbernauld. We will participate in a variety of wildlife surveys to understand targeted species and how we can help them. From pollinator walks to mammal surveys, we will cover a variety of species recording. We may also complete conservation tasks, such as removing invasive species or making homes for nature. Through taking part in these Citizen Science sessions you will gain skills in wildlife identification, meet new people and discover the wildlife that lives in Cumbernauld!

The Forth Valley Biodiversity Action Team undertake various practical conservation tasks and improve green spaces across Falkirk and Stirling. Activities include woodland management, pond clearance, maintaining paths and sowing wildflower seeds. We are dedicated to enhancing biodiversity through a range of activities from woodland management, creating habitats, eradicating invasive species, sowing wildflower seeds and community garden work. Volunteering is a great way to gain new skills and an opportunity to meet new people from a range of backgrounds. Come and join us to help care for the environment, meet new people and spend some time in the great outdoors!

Tasks over the Spring/Summer will include: 1. Aftercare around young trees and laid hedge (with possible bulb planting depending on timings). 2. Fencing, dead hedging and signage to protect sensitive habitats. 3. Replacing dilapidated benches. 4. Cutting back soft and overhanging woody vegetation from footpaths. 5. Log walls. 6. Stream clearance (with possible marginal planting depending on timings). 7. Himalayan balsam removal.

Crane Park (Mill Road) - Meadow management

Activity description
We will be revisiting some meadows in Crane Park to continue our control of dominant and unwanted plant species (creeping thistle, burdock, dense stands of nettles). In this session, we will be working in the Mill Road meadow, accessed from the end of Mill Road or from Lincoln Ave. We may move to Willow Way meadow in the afternoon. Some species can fast become dominant/invasive in open meadow spaces. They will often form dense stands in spring and summer, which shades out wildflower and grass species. Removal is often done in spring and early summer, before seed heads are able to form, to contain the growth/spread of the plant. Dependent on species, we will be utilising a mixture of mattocking, digging, and hand pulling removal techniques. The meadow site we will be working in this session is reasonably exposed so please bring a hat and water bottle and wear clothing that will keep you protected from the sun. We do recommend wearing long-sleeved shirts/trousers as we will be working around stinging nettles.
