    Ragwort Pulling @ Gosbecks

With Colchester Biodiversity Action Team (Midweek)

About 1.8 miles away from your postcode

    At Gosbecks

    Activity description

Ragwort is a native yellow daisy like flower which is common in many grasslands. Whilst the plant and its nectar provide food for many insects it also contains poisons toxic to grazing animals. Animals will usually avoid the living plant but it is a serious issue if it remains in grassland cut for hay. When cut and dried the plant loses it's smell which warns animals of the toxins present but does not loose the toxins and so it is eaten with the rest of the grass and plants. We will be pulling ragwort from fields at Gosbecks park as the site uses a mix of grazing and cutting for hay to manage the grassland.

Himilayan Balsam Pulling @ Millennium Wood

    With Chelmsford Biodiversity Action Team

About 14.1 miles away from your postcode

    At Millennium Wood

    Activity description

Himalayan Balsam is a non native invasive species. It is an annual that can grow up to 2.5m in a single year and disperse it's seeds up to 4m. Typically growing alongside streams and rivers where the seeds can be carried further by the water enabling it to spread quickly. It's vigorous growth creates dense thickets which shades out native species. As an annual, the plant dies back over winter leaving banks bare and at greater risk of erosion. We will be pulling this plant from the banks of a stream in millennium wood to start a process to remove it from the site. As an annual plant pulling can be an effective way to remove it as long as it is done before it sets seed and repeated annual until there is no further seeds in the soil.
