We will be working in Ham Common Woods next to St Andrew's Church to maintain a patch of acid grassland, a nationally important and vulnerable habitat. This greenspace is managed for biodiversity by Richmond Council. Lowland acid grassland habitat contains mix of fine-leaved grasses, mosses & lichens growing on acidic, and often sandy soil. Despite being characterised as a nutrient poor habitat, acid grasslands can be species rich (20+ species). Richmond has the largest total area of acid grassland in Greater London. Other local greenspaces containing acid grassland include Barnes Common, East Sheen Common, Bushy Park, and Richmond Park.
