Activity description

We are about to start with our seasonal hedge laying work on the western perimeter hedge in Brockwell Park in December, so we need hazel stakes and binders aplenty - so today we will be going to King's Wood in Selsdon to collect some hazel stakes and binders. Our Croydon TCV team have been coppicing the hazel stands in one coup of the woodland, so we will be cutting the hazel to length and tying the stakes and binders in bundles so we can transport them back to Brockwell Park in the afternoon. We will also be undertaking some coppicing of the hazel on site ourselves this week, to keep the work moving along through the winter.

Meeting place

On site at King's Wood from 10.30am, or Collection from Clock Tower in Brockwell Park @ 9.45am. We will be returning to Brockwell Park to store the stakes and binders on site at the end of the day. Very limited space in the van so please email if interested in reserving a seat.

Site description

Kings Wood covers 147 1-2 acres and is on relatively flat ground. It was originally laid out for shooting with wide rides dissecting the woodland. The keepers cottage still stands in the woods and forms part of the Kings Wood Kennels complex. Kings Wood is well known for its Bluebells, which grow between the Oak, Sweet Chestnut, Birch and Hazel
There is the site of a small Romano-British farmstead on the northern boundary of Kings Wood with a small first century cemetery a few feet beyond the gateway to the settlement - the only children�s cemetery of this period hitherto found in Surrey.

Nearest train stations are Riddlesdown, Sanderstead and Purley Oaks. Buses 409 & 411 stop opposite the end of Kingswood Way on Old Farleigh Rd. The second entrance into the woods is where we will be working, and it's a 15 min walk along Kingswood Way, its opposite No. 100 Kingswood Way. Our van will be parked at the entrance to the woods, and the Coupe where we are collecting the Wood is approx 20m along the main path from the entrance, on the left hand side of the path.
