Wednesday practical conservation workdays

An activity with Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park Conservation Volunteers

Activity date: Wednesday 8th January 2025

Start time: 10:00
Finish time: 15:00

Activity description

Join our regular Wednesday conservation workdays at the Ecology Park and help the wardens carry out vital management work in the park’s different habitats – marsh, meadow, lakes, ponds, shingle beach and woodland. You can just turn up on a Wednesday and don’t need to book ahead but the first time you volunteer, we will ask you to fill out a TCV Volunteer Welfare Form (or we can email this to you in advance if you prefer). You will be working as part of a volunteer team with the park wardens, carrying out tasks such as pond clearing, reed cutting, meadow cutting, coppicing (cutting smaller tree stems), digging and weeding.

Activity location

  • suitable outdoor footwear

Further info

Wear old clothes and strong footwear (e.g. boots or trainers). The wardens will supply tea, coffee and the essential biscuits but please bring along a packed lunch. You don’t need any previous experience and we provide tools and gloves (and wellies or waders if needed). We only use hand tools so you will get some great experience in the more traditional ways of managing habitats. We meet at the gatehouse (the wooden building on the river) at 10am prompt (there is a health and safety chat before we start the work which all volunteers need to hear) . You must be 16 or over and any volunteers under 18 need to get a parental / guardian permission form signed first. You also need to be reasonably fit - check with your doctor first if you are worried about your fitness level. The work is physical and we work outside in most weathers on rough ground and in water.
