Activity description

šŸ Volunteer with TCV: Grassland Management at Royal Edinburgh Hospital Orchard Who We Are We’re The Conservation Volunteers (TCV), and we connect people with green spaces to create healthier, happier communities. In Edinburgh, we run the Biodiversity Action Team (EBAT)—a local initiative where we take hands-on action to protect and enhance nature across the city. Whether it’s planting wildflowers, restoring habitats, or building homes for wildlife, we’re working together to make Edinburgh greener and more biodiverse. About the Project Join us in the historic Royal Edinburgh Hospital Orchard, a 150-year-old urban orchard nestled within the hospital’s therapeutic green space. As part of the NHS Forest, this site supports a wide range of wildlife—from bees and butterflies to foxes and owls—and is used for gardening, beekeeping, and mindfulness activities. We’re working to increase the floral diversity of the orchard by managing the grassland areas. Over time, vigorous grasses and dominant plants have begun to take over, reducing the space available for wildflowers. Through careful grassland management, we’ll cut back these species and create more room and light for native plants to thrive—supporting pollinators and enhancing the orchard’s ecological value. This project supports the goals of the Scottish Biodiversity Strategy, which aims to halt biodiversity loss and build nature-rich, climate-resilient landscapes. It also contributes to the Edinburgh Nature Network, a city-wide initiative to connect and enhance green spaces for people and wildlife. Why Get Involved? 🌼 Help restore a historic urban orchard šŸ Support pollinators and wildflowers 🌿 Learn practical conservation skills šŸŒ¤ļø Enjoy the outdoors and meet like-minded people šŸ™Œ No experience needed—just bring your enthusiasm!
