🌼Volunteer Opportunity: Help Restore Meadows at Cammo Estate LNR! Join us in managing and expanding species-rich grassland at Cammo Estate Local Nature Reserve — a vital part of Edinburgh’s green network and Scotland’s biodiversity recovery! 🛠️ How You Can Help What is meadow management? Meadow management involves maintaining and enhancing grassland habitats to support a wide variety of plant and animal species. Traditionally, this is done through seasonal cutting and removal of vegetation to prevent nutrient build-up and scrub encroachment. In this project, we’ll also be using green hay — freshly cut material from species-rich meadows — to introduce wildflower seeds into new areas. As a volunteer, you’ll help us by: 🌾 Cutting species-poor grassland using traditional scythes and modern pedestrian tractors 🌱 Preparing the ground to receive green hay from nearby species-rich areas 🐝 Supporting the creation of habitat for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife 🧤 Gaining hands-on experience in practical conservation techniques 🤝 Working alongside a friendly team of staff and volunteers 🌱 Project Snapshot: This meadow management project at Cammo Estate LNR aims to restore and expand species-rich grassland by introducing green hay from biodiverse meadows. It supports the Scottish Biodiversity Strategy (2022–2045) by restoring ecosystems and enhancing resilience to climate change, while contributing to the Edinburgh Nature Network by improving habitat connectivity across the city. Volunteers will gain hands-on experience with both traditional and modern land management techniques — and play a vital role in bringing biodiversity back to Edinburgh’s landscapes. 👥 Who We’re Looking For: Nature lovers, conservation enthusiasts, and curious beginners No experience needed — training and tools provided Ideal for individuals, students, or community groups! 🌿 What You’ll Gain: Practical conservation skills Insight into traditional and modern meadow management A chance to make a real impact for nature in your city Interested?

The Cammo Estate is an 85 acre public park run by the City of Edinburgh council. It's a quiet spot with meadows, dykes, and mature, open woodland, situated in the Barnton area on the North West edge of Edinburgh. Forming part of the city green belt, it is bounded by the River Almond, Turnhouse Golf Course and residential suburbs. br> br>You may have passed this former aristocratic pleasure ground when arriving or leaving Edinburgh by car along the A902. From the road, you can see what looks like a folly, a small tower, surrounded by greenery. This is the old water tower, part of the original estate. In the eighteenth century, the estate had large avenues of plantings and elaborate garden features that were popular at the time including a rectangular waterbody known as "the canal". br> br>In the twentieth century, the estate fell into disrepair and a much smaller remaining parcel of land and ruins was bequeathed to the National Trust for Scotland in 1975, who feued it to the Council in 1979. br> br>Tasks may include dead hedging, invasive removal or wildflower sowing.
