Lion Wood, Pilling Park community centre car park Pilling Park Road Norwich, NR1 4AN
Lion Wood is an ancient woodland which has been designated an Urban Local Nature Reserve. It was once part of Thorpe Wood - which is mentioned in the Domesday book of 1086 - so the wood was already established over a thousand years ago. It covers 12 hectares (roughly) and is nestled between several residential areas - stretching from telegraph Lane (ajoining the Telegraph Plantation) on it's west side to Pilling Park on it's east and running between Wellesley Avenue South and North. br>A third of the wood is believed to be ancient and the grand old oak trees that you can see are hundreds of years old. br>In the spring the floor is carpeted with bluebells and you can see - or at least hear the calls of green woodpeckers laughing or the scratchy song of the blackcap. br>A friends group is very active within the woodland.
