Hawkwood Nature Reserve, Yardley Lane, Chingford, E4 7RS
The Hawkwood Estate was created in the middle of the 19th century out of the manor land of St Paul's, Chingford. Hawkwood Lodge was part of this estate, which included a large pond, grassland and woodland. In 1854 Richard Hodgson added Hawkwood House to the grounds. The house was demolished in 1951, but the lodge still remains.
The pond has many dragonflies and damselflies in the summer and has been stocked with fish by anglers. It is also home to great crested newts. An osier bed has been established as a source of young willow. Grass snakes can still be found in the grounds and the nursery.
The woodland consists of ancient oak and hornbeam. Small chunks of butchers broom are scattered here and there. Wild garlic or ramsons grow along the edge of the ditch, which forms the woodland's northern boundary.
