Activity description

We will be revisiting the newly established glade in Mereway Nature Park to manage dominating species. We will be working with the fabulous folks at Friends of Meadway Orchard and Let's Go Outside and Learn (LGOAL) for this session. Mereway Nature Park is a greenspace managed for biodiversity by Richmond Council. The glade was established after a section of scrub was cleared during a river restoration project earlier in the year. The restoration involved the removal of a section of the concrete channel containing the River Crane to create a vegetated backwater habitat. We will also be working along the backwater to control Typha/bulrush growth. Often, new glades/meadows require extra attention during their first 2 years of establishment in order to maintain a balanced plant community. By controlling dominating species (i.e. bramble, creeping thistles) regularly, we increase the likelihood that beneficial species, such as wildflowers, are not outcompeted and are able to seed.

Site description

This nature reserve was formerly a market garden and allotment space. It contains scrub, fruit trees and contains an outdoor classroom.It is where the Crane and Duke of Northumberland rivers' meet. Mereway Nature Park is owned by London Borough of Richmond, who maintain it with the help of the local friends of group, FORCE (Friends of the River Crane Environment).
