There's a steep bank around the pond at Lexden Springs. Our task is to cut back one third of the scrub on the bank to encourage a range of plant life and to provide a sunny space for basking lizards and grass snakes.
10a.m. on Crouch Street, opposite the King's Arms or 10.10 on Spring Lane (turning off Lexden Road opposite Church Lane)
Lexden Springs, Spring lane Colchester, CO3 4AN
The site consists of 1.8ha (4.5 acres) of unimproved meadow, rich in locally scarce wild flowers. These include the Harebell, Pignut and the Devil's-bit Scabious. br> br>At the base of the slope is a pond formed from a natural spring. The water flows out of the pond all year round creating an interesting marshy habitat below. The steam flows into the River Colne on the other side of the Avenue of Remembrance.
