Conservation Volunteer Officer

Place: Colchester, Essex

Why we need you:
The role supports the delivery of all practical project work in Colchester, Essex contributing to our local operational and strategic plans. You will be helping with pre-project planning and the running of the projects with the required administration that accompany and compliment all our activities. You will be making an impact locally supporting the community and conservation efforts of landscapes, fauna and flora in Colchester.

From wetlands to ancient woodland, heath and grassland meadows, you will get experience on a vast array of habitats and learn how and why we manage them for conservation. Community engagement experience: we will develop your leadership skills to lead and engage with multiple volunteering groups You will not only develop experience but we will build your skill set on knowledge, leadership and tools. Using a variety of hand held tools to manage landscapes sustainably. You will have 1:1 development plan and meetings with your line manager to support your development. Free training relevant to your position is provided. Free branded clothing and PPE for your role is provided. Reasonable travel expenses covered.

What you need:
Essential: Communication skills, enthusiasm and energy, able to work as a team and as an individual, able to work with a diverse pool of people from different backgrounds, ethnicities, religions and abilities. You must also be responsible and have time management skills. Desirable but not essential: Background or knowledge in conservation or uk habitats, a valid and full clean UK driving licence, competent in Microsoft office packages.

How much time:
Our operational days in Colchester are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and alternating Sundays and Wednesdays. Applicant must be able to do minimum of 2 days across 6 months to benefit from this role and gain the experience required part time.

You will be supported in your role by experienced staff through regular meetings where issues can be resolved and guidance provided. You will have all reasonable expenses covered (foreign travel excepted) so will not be out of pocket through your volunteering. You will be insured and expected to comply with the policies and procedures of The Conservation Volunteers.

Where roles will be responsible for others, we need to check your references. When the role involves young people and vulnerable adults, we will need to ask for an Enhanced Disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau, Central Registered Body in Scotland or appropriate body in Northern Ireland.

Many people who work in the Environmental Sector have used a Volunteer Officer role as a stepping stone in their career.
