Community Volunteer Officer

Place: Tiptree, Essex

Why we need you:
Do you care about your local community? Do you have a passion for nature? Want to make a difference to the planet? Then this role is for you! This role will be based in Tiptree, Essex and will be a hands-on practical role, getting involved and learning practical management of greenspaces and community engagement in Tiptree. We will be working on 3 key sites across Tiptree: Park Lane Nature Reserve, Windmill Green and Grove Rd Pond. This is a great role to fit in some learning and experience around studies, or a part time job.

Benefits to you:
Over 6 months you will acquire a variety of skills in conservation management of 3 different sites and habitats including woodland, scrub, hedgerows, wet landscapes. Practical skills will include, coppicing, scrub plot management, pond management, traditional hedge laying, tree planting methodology, dead hedging, habitat creation. You will learn knowledge of ecology and habitats, through practical management and free ecology courses including: harvest mouse ecology and surveying, bee and butterfly surveying with UKBMS guidelines. What you need:
We are looking for an individual who is enthusiastic, curious, team worker and able to communicate to people from all backgrounds and ages. How much time:
This role requires a minimum of 1 day a week from September/October- February/March in Tiptree on Wednesdays. There may be some variation on day and location for training.

You will be supported in your role by experienced staff through regular meetings where issues can be resolved and guidance provided. You will have all reasonable expenses covered (foreign travel excepted) so will not be out of pocket through your volunteering. You will be insured and expected to comply with the policies and procedures of The Conservation Volunteers.

Where roles will be responsible for others, we need to check your references. When the role involves young people and vulnerable adults, we will need to ask for an Enhanced Disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau, Central Registered Body in Scotland or appropriate body in Northern Ireland.

Many people who work in the Environmental Sector have used a Volunteer Officer role as a stepping stone in their career.
