Community Garden Champion Volunteer Officer

Place: Birmingham (Bartley Green, Northfield, Shenley, Bournville)

Why we need you:
As part of the Health for Life programme, you will be responsible for overseeing the regular delivery of established community gardens with a focus on food growing, physical activity, and healthy eating. You will lead teams of volunteers to carry out general maintenance of the gardens safely and successfully and organise and deliver community engagement events with a focus on improving health and wellbeing. In addition, you will be responsible for recruiting and retaining new volunteers to help to evolve and sustain the projects. You will need to be an excellent communicator and be enthusiastic about the health and social benefits of food growing. Experience of working closely with urban communities and experience of growing food will be key skills to bring to this post.

You will receive a suite of training (online and in person) to help develop your skills and support you as you progress.

What you need:
This role will best suit applicants with experience in projects/initiatives that focus on food growing. Having some experience of providing healthy eating or nutrition workshops or advice to community groups would be advantageous. Being able to work flexibly within a team managing a wide range of projects are integral to this role.

You will be supported in your role by experienced staff through regular meetings where issues can be resolved and guidance provided. You will have all reasonable expenses covered (foreign travel excepted) so will not be out of pocket through your volunteering. You will be insured and expected to comply with the policies and procedures of The Conservation Volunteers.

Where roles will be responsible for others, we need to check your references. When the role involves young people and vulnerable adults, we will need to ask for an Enhanced Disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau, Central Registered Body in Scotland or appropriate body in Northern Ireland.
