Brief description: Our last day of meadow management in Crane Park ahead of the autumn wildflower meadow cut and rake! We will be working in one of the six meadows in Crane Park, working to control dominant and unwanted plant species (brambles and burdock). In this session, we will be working in the Mill Road meadow, accessed from the end of Mill Road or from Lincoln Ave. Some species can fast become dominant/invasive in open meadow spaces. They will often form dense stands in spring and summer, which shades out wildflower and grass species. Removal is often done in spring and early summer, before seed heads are able to form, to contain the growth/spread of the plant. Dependent on species, we will be utilising a mixture of mattocking, digging, and hand pulling removal techniques.

Brief description: We will be working in Kew Pond to manage reed growth to maintain open water and ensure reeds don't dominate the habitat. The common reed grows to form large reedbeds which act as important habitat for many bird species (e.g. reed warbler). In ponds, and smaller waterways, reedbeds can start to dominate the habitat reducing the amount of open water available for waterfowl to use. Reedbeds are often managed yearly, with removal of small sections of reeds each year. We will provide waders and gloves. If you are of a smaller foot size, I would recommend bringing an extra thick pair of socks as the smallest wader size we have available is a 7.

Brief description: We will be working at Beaufort Court in Ham Lands to complete a dead hedge. Dead hedges provide essential nesting and feeding habitats for birds, insects, small mammals, amphibians, reptiles and a whole variety of fungi. Dead hedges also make an effective natural barrier to reduce habitat disturbance, soil erosion and compaction from foot traffic.

In winter you could be tree planting, hedge laying, or creating and maintaining ponds and wetlands; whilst in summer you could be constructing wildlife areas in schools, creating footpaths, making hay, or undertaking invasive species control.
