Helping connect people and green spaces is at the core of the work of The Conservation Volunteers. This role, as part of the Health and Wellbeing team based at Hollybush Conservation Centre, delivers work supporting people to access nature-based activities and green spaces across Leeds.
Hollybush welcomes 450 volunteers a year to join over 800 group activity sessions connecting adults with green spaces. The broad programme of activities aims to have an opportunity for everyone. The Health & Wellbeing projects provide inclusive ways for people to improve their physical and mental health through volunteering with us.
This Project Officer role includes the delivery of group activity supporting people to build confidence using different modes of sustainable travel, such as public transport, walking, wheeling and cycling, looking at ways to make this more accessible. Alongside this the role will support processes to increase inclusion in the programme of activities delivered across Leeds by carrying out person-centred welcome meetings for people looking to join our projects and in supporting in the volunteer line management of Volunteer Officers and Key Volunteers.
This role will include leading and planning group activity sessions, including the use of public transport; one to one support sessions; volunteer management and mentoring, supporting training and skills, and work to ensure that our volunteer support systems and resources are accessible and inclusive.
Skills & Experience
The Project Officer will be committed to following a person-centred and trauma informed approach to support people to access nature-based activities. You will work closely with volunteers with disabilities and long-term health conditions, including supporting people with complex mental health and trauma, as well as physical conditions, learning disabilities and people who are neurodivergent. You will have experience working, volunteering or supporting people that demonstrate that you have an understanding of what this will involve and how to approach the work.
You will be able to demonstrate an ability to follow systems and processes, including online tools. You will be able to demonstrate your commitment to make our work inclusive for all, and how you would go about working with colleagues, volunteers and external partners to develop this area of work.
You will be someone who is driven to overcome barriers to inclusion, passionate to empower individuals in outdoor settings and directly support people in an individual or group setting. You will be confident in working with people from diverse backgrounds. It would be beneficial for you to have experience working or volunteering in the charity sector or healthcare, including experience interacting with social prescribing or referral pathways.
You will have experience working with volunteers, ideally having held a position of taking on in depth volunteer management in a supporting role. You be able to work with colleagues and volunteers to deliver the work.
You will be enthusiastic to promote Active Travel and sustainable travel methods including public transport, and able to support others in building confidence to access this through facilitated group activity, one-to-one support, physical and digital resources and through events. You will be confident in learning the barriers that people face when accessing different modes of transport, and be able to work with individuals to support them to overcome the barriers that they face. This will likely include an element of supporting people with varying levels of literacy to navigate digital tools such as transport apps. You will be keen to promote TCVs wider programme of work in Leeds, supporting people to access all the activities that the team delivers.
You will have an understanding of safeguarding and health & safety, and committed to delivering work that is safe and welcoming. You will have an understanding of some of the challenges involved in supporting people with complex mental health needs and be confident in balancing professional boundaries with providing a high standard of support for the TCV team, for volunteers attending our activities and for yourself. You will not regularly be delivering practical conservation sessions, but will be supporting people to access them and assessing risk, so will need to have an understanding of what is involved in safe tool use and working outdoors.
You will have an understanding of grant funded work, and how you would balance meeting the needs of the group, the funder and TCV.
Role and responsibilities
The Project Officer role is a newly formed post that will be delivering established grant funded work, following the previous team members progressing to other roles in the organisation. You will also work to collaborate with the wider Hollybush team of staff, Volunteer Officers and volunteers and with partner organisations on the project.
