Activity description

A new site for TCV - Morland Close micropark is a small greenspace on the corner of Morland Close and Fearnley Crescent in Hampton. The site hosts a few mature trees and some hedging along the site boundaries. We will be working in close collaboration with LBRuT to create and install biodiversity enhancements onsite. Our volunteers will be creating and installing a small stag beetle loggery and an insect hotel/tower. We will also be completing some new pollinator freindly planting. We encourage local residents and new volunteers to get involved! This work is funded by Richmond Council's Climate Action Microgrant. Stag beetles are a globally threatened species and their numbers have been declining across UK & Europe, primarily due to the lack of appropriate habitat - dead wood. Stag beetle larvae spend 4-7 years feeding on decaying wood before emerging as adults to breed. The adults do not feed and rely exclusively on the fat reserves stored during feeding by the larval stage. Building loggeries and stumperies provides a much needed habitat and food source to support the stag beetle life cycle.
