At Sundon National Grid (Chalton)
We have just started a new long term project at this brilliant little site, to improve biodiversity. As we're in the early stages, our first few months are concentrating on recording what's on site now, and keeping on top of the plant species that would otherwise take over - mainly thistles. So our sessions are a mix of scything, raking, and walking over the site to survey what's there. Something for everyone!

At Southern Park
We return to Southern Park to install a short 14m length of self-binding aggregate path leading into the grassland, in front of the new estate entrance beside Southern Park. We will also be creating 2 low level, turf covered bunds from the excavated soil & turf to run along either side of the path, to encourage people to stay on the path and not wander into the meadows areas on either side of it. We will also be installing 2 picnic benches within the park with hardstanding surrounds, and securing the benches to concrete anchors below the ground to ensure they stay put. Finally we will be topping up the aggregate level in the path we installed a few years ago, on the other side of the park.

At Crane Park Tower
We will be working in the River Crane to repair existing river deflectors, and along the banks and pathways to remove Himalayan balsam. Crane Park is managed for biodiversity by LBRuT. River deflectors are a tool used in the restoration of urbanised rivers, primarily to deflect waterflow to re-meander the waterway (i.e. create curvy rivers). This work creates new habitats for aquatic dwelling species such as the common reed, water voles, invertebrates & fish! Himalayan balsam is an invasive species that thrives along waterways, creating dense stands in spring and summer, and shades our other marginal or riverside species. Removal is often done in spring, before the seed heads are able to form. Please wear trousers and a long-sleeve shirt to avoid skin irritation from nettles, while pulling Himalyan balsam. We will provide waders and gloves. If you have smaller feet, I would recommend bringing an extra thick pair of socks as the smallest wader size we have available is a 7.
