Green Gyms are a fun, free, friendly way to keep active in the outdoors, make new friends and boost your health and wellbeing. Join us on Thursday mornings at The Horder Centre in Crowborough for three hours of gentle outdoor activity in the wonderful grounds. Gardening, horticulture, nature projects and conservation - activities will vary and can be made as easy as you like so that everyone can take part. Please get in touch to do a registration form in advance but no need to commit to weekly.

Crane Park (Mill Road) - Coppicing the north channel

Activity description
We will be coppicing along the River Crane, working to remove small trees growing along the river bank and invasive/dominant species from the woodland. Coppicing along the river allows more light into this environment, promoting the growth of soft vegetation (a food source of the translocated water voles!). The root systems of these coppiced trees continue to grow and bind the soil, reducing soil erosion risk along the river. To coppice, is to fell a tree/sapling at its base (or 'stool') which promotes growth of further shoots. The result is multi-stemmed bushier growth. Coppicing is a traditional form of woodland management, with its use dating back to the Stone Age. Coppicing was originally used to ensure source of firewood and timber. Contemporarily, coppicing is primarily used to improve the health and biodiversity of woodland areas. This session will be covered by David Fineberg, while Brittany is away on leave.

Activity description
We return to Burgess Park again this year, this time to improve the access through the Upper Albany Road Woodland section of the park, between the ponds and the Albany Rd perimeter. We will be installing timber edging and filling the paths with woodchip, and installing small 800mm width oak sleeper steps on the inclines through the woods.

Activity description
Leyton Jubilee Park is Waltham Forest’s largest park, created atop an old landfill site dating back to the 19th century. Sitting in the Lea catchment, Dagenham Brook runs through the park, offering a riparian connection to the nearby Hackney Marshes. Our work in the park largely surrounds the maintenance of our recently planted woodland, which is still in the early stages of its life, work including tree planting, weeding and mulching. Other work will rejuvenate pathways and provide care for our newly created flower beds. Join us in a park with an exciting range of habitats and species!

Help us manage our Wildflower meadow's at Rayleigh Substation. This is a physical conservation activity that includes using traditional techniques like scything and sowing seeds.
