Practical Conservation Projects - Volunteer Officer

Place: TCV - York & N. Yorkshire

Why we need you:
Volunteer Officers are involved with co-ordinating and supervising practical projects. This includes working with schools, colleges and community groups as well as regular volunteers and work experience individuals. The scope of practical work is very broad and includes such tasks as tree and hedgerow planting as well as small construction projects such as ponds, raised beds and footpaths.

Benefits to you:
Voluntary Officer will develop practical skills and a knowledge base that can be transferred to other professions as well as formal in-house and external training courses in variety of subjects and competencies. These can include 1st Aid & H&S, Leadership, Safeguarding and machinery operation. They will experience all aspects of planning and co-ordinating practical tasks alongside groups of volunteers in many different locations throughout the York & North Yorkshire region. A training bursary will be made available to those individuals who demonstrate commitment and motivation to learn.

What you need:
Voluntary Officer are expected to have a friendly and approachable personality, willing to help and assist volunteers with practical tasks as well as be willing to get stuck in with the practical work. Any skills or experience with practical work or volunteers groups of this nature would be a benefit, but not essential as well as general I.T. and admin. skills. A full and clean driving license is also a benefit as driving to/from site will be required.

How much time:
min. 3 days a week, (Mon- Fri.) - general hours (9.00 -17.00)

You will be supported in your role by experienced staff through regular meetings where issues can be resolved and guidance provided. You will have all reasonable expenses covered (foreign travel excepted) so will not be out of pocket through your volunteering. You will be insured and expected to comply with the policies and procedures of The Conservation Volunteers.

Where roles will be responsible for others, we need to check your references. When the role involves young people and vulnerable adults, we will need to ask for an Enhanced Disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau, Central Registered Body in Scotland or appropriate body in Northern Ireland.

Many people who work in the Environmental Sector have used a Volunteer Officer role as a stepping stone in their career.
