    Activity description

    We're going to be carrying out a trial programme for a natural way of controlling Oak Processionary Moth by creating 3 wildflower beds as nectar sources to support tachinid fly activity. The flies lay an egg in the OPM caterpillar which hatches and eats the caterpillar from the inside. If the trial works, it will be rolled out across the borough where OPM has become a problem.

    Grass Strimming and raking

    This site is a rare and important grassland habitat so we're helping to manage it for wildlife by keeping nutrient levels low. Strimming the grass off and raking it away from the grassland means nettles and thistles are less likely to thrive, giving more chance for wildflowers to do well.

    Join us and get outdoors in 2025! We meet at West Heath every Tuesday to do some gentle gardening work at the Community Garden here. No gardening experience is necessary as we will tell you everything you need to know. We provide tools and gloves. Please wear suitable clothes and shoes - we work outdoors for three hours in all weather conditions. This site is wheelchair accessible and consists of raised beds at various heights.

    Selective tree guard removal

    Working alongside the Mountsorrel (Tarmac) Environmental Restoration Team, our work will focus on selective tree guard removal on establishing native mixed species plantations. We will examine the tree growth and where necessary remove and stack all guards and stakes.
